Perhaps the Book of the Prophet Zephaniah is skipped over by some who would rather not hear its proclamations of judgment: judgment on Judah (Zeph 1); judgment on the Gentile nations (Zeph 2:4-15); judgement on Jerusalem (Zeph 3:1-7); judgment on the nations: “All the earth shall be devoured with the fire of My jealousy.” (Zeph [...]

We confess this frequently at my church: “Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.” These are foundational Christian beliefs. Do you believe Christ is coming again? Many, many Scriptures reference the Lord’s Coming. Some of these just reference the “Day” or the “Revelation” but are included to show how foundational the Second Coming [...]

Phil and Granny Vee went skipping and dancing in Los Angeles this summer to the delight of many children. We gave them a souvenir of their encounter with the “Friendly Frog” that encouraged them to keep the “Golden Rule”. These cards also had the Scripture from Acts 4:10, 12, which is the gospel in a nutshell, [...] -

Perhaps you’ve heard the cliché “the oldest lie in the book” referring sometimes to “the check’s in the mail” but “the oldest lie in the book” is literally in the Book of Beginnings, the book of Genesis. It is spoken by the “father of lies”, satan. Satan’s opening line, posed as a question (Gen 3:1), [...]

Acts 18:1-3 Yesterday, the man who came to do an annual termite inspection on my home was a man glowing with the Spirit of God from El Salvador. We spoke briefly but what impressed me was that he said his work was similar to mine. He was not referring to his work doing inspections, he was referring to his ministry. While we work to provide food for our families, we are also to work to provide spiritual food for God’s household of faith and for the lost. May we all be about our Father’s business, not as paid laborers necessarily but those who share an inheritance in the Father’s plan.

Tory and I have been reading and discussing Acts recently. It’s been interesting to see the sermons from the early church. They were direct, straightforward, and bold with the good news of Jesus Christ. Peter tells the people what he witnessed. He tells them plainly that they killed the Christ. He uses Old Testament proof [...]

Yes, I think that these Scriptures establish a pattern that points to continuing significance and ultimate fulfillment: Romans 15:4; Col 2:16 & 17; 1 Peter 1:12; 1 Cor 10:11. Also since Jesus Christ has not returned yet ”in like manner” as he ascended (Acts 1:11), His prophecies in Matthew 24-25 decidely have a double fulfillment [...]

Revelation 1:7 Someday, every eye will see Christ Jesus the King! Some of us will see Him as Our Blessed Hope (Titus 2:13); others will squirm, trying in vain to hide from His majesty. Surely we’ll all be in awe! Acts 1:9-11 The apostles of Christ had a foretaste of Christ’s return. They actually saw [...]

The Apostles watched as Jesus ascended into the sky and disappeared behind a cloud. How did they feel watching him leave? I imagine they felt an overwhelming confidence that Jesus really was the Messiah, but they were also anxious for him to begin “restoring the kingdom to Israel” (verse 6). His response to their anxiety was [...] -

I was just catching up today on Friday’s reading. Its a great passage, showing God’s power and the wonderful gift of the Spirit coming on all who believed the message about Jesus and the forgiveness of sins, even to the gentiles. But following on from my message last night at the meeting there were a [...]

Acts 1:6-7 tells us that the disciples were still confused about the purpose of Jesus’ ministry even when He was about to ascend. They still thought of him as a political messiah, or at least in part. We can read in the other Gospels how the disciples were gobsmacked when Jesus appeared to them in person [...]

the story of striking the boy on the cheek reminds me of Acts 3 when Peter told the man he did not have money to offer, but “what I do have I give you.” Thanks for praying for the kid, for touching him, and for offering what you did have.

20 At that time Moses was born, and was exceedingly handsome . I’ve read this chapter from Acts countless times; my 6th grade students had to memorize Stephen’s speech a couple years ago, so you can imagine how many times we had to practice and recite it. However, my mouth literally dropped open when I read verse 20 [...]

Someone suggested that I mention a few of the sources that I use in studying the BooK of Acts. Here are a few: The NIV Archaelogical Study Bible – I love the interesting notes and articles of a passage regarding its historical setting, geography, archaelogical discoveries, and non-biblical sources that complement the Scriptures. If you are wondering about [...]

At Babel, men were trying to be united under their own strength, working together to achieve their own goals by their own power. What they were doing almost sounds good: they were working together in unity. But it was their purpose that was evil: glorifying themselves rather than God. And so God introduced a language [...]
