”O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.”
How mysterious that Jesus is both God and man! In this verse, he appears to step out of his human perspective and into his eternal perspective – recalling how he has longed for Israel for centuries, sending them prophets whom they rejected. How amazing it would be to be in this audience and hear this 30 year old man suddenly recall memories he has had for centuries. Very much like one of my favorite bible passages where Jesus says ”before Abraham was born, I am!” (John 8:58).

I just love the way John doesn’t mention the name of the Word until right near the end of the passage. Its very dramatic when he finally speaks the name ‘Jesus Christ’ – like a film trailer when all the action is building up and then the hero is finally revealed explicitly. Lovin it.
I think it is also important to point out that Jesus is referring to a feminine aspect of God. God desires to care for us as a mother wants to care for her children. and in particular, as a mother hen cares for her chicks. This is stepping out of the human perspective as well since he both males and females were made in his image.
Good point!
