Thumbnail Now unto Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever.  Amen. Sing, o barren! “He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the Lord!” (Ps 113:9) Abraham’s wife Sarai was barren . (Gen 11:30) But Abraham believed God. Then in God’s timing, Isaac, the child of promise was born in their old age. Isaac’s wife Rebekah was barren. (Gen 25:21) But Isaac pleaded with the Lord and she [...]

  • Perhaps the Book of the Prophet Zephaniah is skipped over by some who would rather not hear its proclamations of judgment: judgment on Judah (Zeph 1); judgment on the Gentile nations (Zeph 2:4-15); judgement on Jerusalem (Zeph 3:1-7); judgment on the nations: “All the earth shall be devoured with the fire of My jealousy.” (Zeph [...]

I wrote this paper for a recently seminary class. It is pretty lengthy, but I loved writing it, if you have time, enjoy:-) Trinity in Marriage INTRODUCTION There are several mysteries in the Christian faith that are hard to explain in human terms. Some of them include Jesus being 100% man and at the exact same time being 100% [...]

So I was watching X-Men 3 last night with my wife (in response to the new X-Men movie which is good, I recommend!), and in the middle I started thinking, “Man that’d be tight to be Wolverine!” As I was thinking about running around and cutting people’s heads off I got a gentle reminder from the [...]

“I come to the garden alone….” This hallowed hymn always strums an emotional chord deep within me. It beckons me to that place of sweet delight with the Lover of my soul. “And the joy we share, as we tarry there, none other can ever know.” It is there that we enter the Holy of [...]

My precious granddaughter’s name is “Hephzibah”. It’s a beautiful name but it isn’t simple and it isn’t convenient. When people first hear it, they want it re-pronounced, spelt, and explained. But the meaning is lovely: “my delight is in her”. Would every child know that their parents delight in them! God placed this name in [...]

We confess this frequently at my church:  “Christ has died. Christ is risen.  Christ will come again.”   These are foundational Christian beliefs.  Do you believe Christ is coming again?   Many, many  Scriptures reference the Lord’s Coming.  Some of these just reference the “Day” or the “Revelation” but are included to show how foundational the Second Coming [...]

It’s not the first time and it won’t be the last, but this morning, I messed up. However, since God works all things for my good (Romans 8:28), I learned a few lessons from my mistake. It was a beautiful, cool, September morning. I decided to be outdoors and get a little pruning in on [...]

Mark 3:10 . . . that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch Him. [the phrase, 'pushing froward to touch Him", can be translated: to fall upon, come eagerly to, to embrace (like the father ran to embrace his prodigal son in Luke 15:20), threw himself on, threw his arms around him, (also conveys a context of being gripped with fear or in awe of)]
Mark 3:21 . . . they (Jesus’ family) went to take charge of Him for they said, ”He is out of His mind.”. [The phrase 'went to take charge of Him" can mean: to arrest, take into custody, seize, hold back, not forgive]
Both those with disease and Jesus’ family wanted to take hold of Him but with very different motivations. One group wanted to receive His help and healing and the other group wanted to control Him because He wasn’t doing want they wanted Him to do and they didn’t understand that what He was doing was good for them.
I want to embrace what God is doing in my life and with the people I’m close to even when it’s not at all what I want and I don’t understand it. I trust that He is acting out of love for me and I am in awe of Him.

I noticed that when I write a blog post that references a string of scriptures that Biblefox is only picking up the first scripture referenced: example: http://jerrygaffney.net/moved-by-the-spirit/ Luke 15:11–24 It is only picking up Luke 15:11 There are a few more examples in this post that show the same thing. Is there a different syntax [...]

One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.  –Proverbs 11:24

In Matthew 24:1-2, Mark 13:1-2, and Luke 12:5-6, Jesus tells His disciples (and maybe others) that the temple in Jerusalem would be destroyed.  They use the word buildings in the plural as the disciples discuss the beauty of the temple, so I believe they are referring to the entire temple complex and not just the [...]
