Samuel- named ”because I asked the Lord for him.” When she ”asked” she wept so bitterly she appreared drunk. But when accused she was respectful to the authority of the priest.
Hannah’s prayer demonstrates her deference to God’s will. She recognizes His power by stating that it is never one way or another, but that the Lord will do what He will.
I really liked the NIV ”the Lord is a God who knows, and by Him deeds are weighed.” 2:3
2:9 He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail. 10 The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.”
4:6 ”When they learned that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp, 7 the Philistines were afraid. ”A god has come into the camp,” they said. ”We’re in trouble! Nothing like this has happened before. 8 Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the desert. 9 Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Be men, and fight!”
and the Philistines won even though they had captured the ark because the prophecy was fulfilled.
the 2 sons died, and the Eli died and the Philistines had the ark.
All the while, Samuel has grown in the presence of ”the Word”. 3:19 ”The LORD was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of his words fall to the ground.”
